North Yuba at Indian Outpost

I started this painting yesterday and finished it today. I didn’t bother with photos showing my progression. This paper is fairly new to me, not sure if I care for it or not. I like a paper to push back at me, it seems too “mushy”, it doesn’t have a response that I like. Corrections are difficult and you have to be careful because very wet washes will congeal in some spots and try to lift up in places you don’t necessarily want it to. I don’t mind a paper that puts me on the edge of my seat but I like a little teamwork.

I’ll might soften up some edges of that bush that leans over the rocks.

colors used: Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Quin. Gold, Aureolin, Indigo

*A word about photos. The photos on my blog are mine, taken by me and copying them would be stealing from me. If you find a photo that you would like to copy or use, I request that you ask me for permission and I expect you to give me full credit for my own photo. Thank you so very much.

  1. I really enjoyed reading about your experience in painting this scene Margaret – a wonderful piece of work. Your depiction of sunlight throughout is well done. Love the bulky rock formation too.

      1. It’s funny. I cannot not see her. Do you see what I mean? She is the first thing I saw in the painting, and I had to enlarge as I found it odd that you had painted a person into your painting since you usually do not. Lol. Even enlarged. I see her more.

      1. haha….I see the umbrella!!! that dark shape that this paper was determined was going to stay there. The more I look I am seeing her! So weird! but to me she is standing up on her tippy toes ready to take a good dip in the North Yuba! I guess I do see her!!! so funny….makes this painting even more special. Thanks to you and Jodi ❤

    2. I’m glad you see it too Mr. Plaidcamper! I swear it is the first thing that popped out at me. Margaret – she is on top of the rocks. She has a dark dress on and a hat with a sash or bow around it. Her one arm is outstretched almost like she is flying, and she is smiling.

      1. Haha you see more than I do. I finally saw her umbrella and she looks like she is on her golly goes. Now I need to see her smile 😃 this is way too much fun! My husband told me that he sees a woman smelling flowers in an old pastel of mine!

    1. crazy huh? Jodi had to point it out to me in a message and I was looking at the wrong spot, I see the umbrella which she doesn’t see and it is in the upper midsection at the top. I think that she is trying to figure out how to get up there to retrieve it. This painting has been amusing me to no end today.
