I didn’t have much of an idea in mind when I started this second painting in the series. Here is the first in the series: Moonlight Abstract #1 I started out with the orientation of the moon more to the right and by the time I was finished, I liked the painting switched around. I painted this wet on wet and painted only what I felt moved make a mark. I always stand while I paint and I step away often and tilt my head, it helps with perspective.
I painted only when I was in the groove and as soon as my creative vision waned, I stopped immediately. I take a break up to 20 minutes and come back to paint only if I had that creative zone happening. Again, as soon as I sensed that it waned, I stepped away. I also don’t judge the painting when I am not in a session.
I had started this during the weekend and finally finished it up today. I painted this saturated wet on wet which is fast becoming one of my favorite ways of painting. This paper is also one of my all time favorite paper for this technique. I painted this one intuitively and didn’t adhere to realism which is becoming more and more of my preferred way to paint.

For the abstract: Indanthrone Blue, Ultra. Blue, Indigo, Quin. Red, Yellow Hansa Med. for the water falls: Burnt Sienna, Ultra. Blue, raw Sienna, Prussian Blue, Quin. Gold, and cerulean Blue. I keep forgetting to add the list of my colors. I will try to do that in the future. 🙂
Wooooohw! The moonlight abstraction #2 is amazing – it gives ´dancing in the moonlight´a new meaning. And your falls interpretation – i love it. Awesome how everything is in a flow. Classic!!!
They are both very striking – and opposites. I especially like the waterfall. It reminds me of Chinese watercolor painting — certainly the theme and motif are very Chinese-like. I’ve noticed this effect in your art before. I really love it.
So interesting that you are picking up on that, I have been noticing that as well….there is something about Chinese landscape painting that I adore. I don’t purposely go out of my way to emulate the style and yet, I veer towards it naturally. I think that painting intuitively is something that I feel most at home with, I do believe that Asian artists seem to paint that way as well.
Both are lovely. Of your moonlight series, this one is my favorite. Reminds me of photos I’ve taken of the full moon rising between the branches of an oak tree.
OMG that moonlight #2 is STUNNING! It has so many layers and so much depth, I really love it!
