Thinking of the North Yuba

This is a studio painting that I painted several weeks ago. The photo was difficult to marry up to the real painting. The background is more of a greenish blue and the water is more of a yellow gold and there is more of an over all lime green throughout that isn’t showing up in the photo. I am not sure why I couldn’t get the correct depiction but I tried.

I have many more paintings to share and deciding on which ones is difficult. Today I am working on a forest scene of light coming through a grove of redwoods, a photo that I took about 15 years ago.

      1. I am gradually getting back into some sort of a rhythm since Mother’s death in December. This month has been all about paper work and having my bathroom renovated (now completed) and so am hoping that I can now move forward and start painting a little each day….Enjoy yours…Janet:)

  11. This painting’s great Margaret, fabulous sense of light. I hope you won’t mind me saying it (it comes from a good place!) but I’m not so sure you should concern yourself too much with marrying up your painting to a photo. It’s something I’ve been coming to terms with myself as I’ve been using them as references but increasingly, I’m trying to view the photo for what it is, a reference, a starting point rather than a destination. I’m reminded of an analogy someone used on me a long time ago about something unrelated but similar that seems pertinent. That the photograph should be a handrail rather that handcuff. It should aid and support rather than restrict and constrain. I think I’m reminding myself of this as much as I am you actually but I hope you won’t mind the contribution!?

    1. Oh I guess I didn’t write that correctly….I don’t mean painting to marry to the photo. I am too impressionistic and too impatient for that 🙂 I of course don’t mind because actually what you wrote is a reminder not to try for that. Because of some sense I do try for a sense of place that I remember and I try for that when I paint and often can’t achieve….but what I struggle with is trying to get my photo of my painting to marry up to my original painting….to show it properly for you all. Sometimes my camera won’t show the golds or make a painting too blue. That is what I am referring to. Since I have started back with acrylics, my photos of the painting is even worse! I can’t seem to get the right colors and then I falter from posting them! Oh well, I need to keep reminding people what they truly look like. Do you have problems in this regard? I have a good camera and I light my painting up well but sometimes colors go awry. Even though you thought I meant trying to paint to the exact photo, I value what you wrote because darn it….sometimes I do get frustrated with what I see in the photo or my memory bank and I do want to exhibit what I know is there. But then that is why I keep on painting, trying to get what I want on that paper or canvas! lol
